Go_A with Balaklava Blues

  • Burton Cummings Theatre 364 Smith Street Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H2 Canada (map)

Go_A is making a modern reinterpretation of Ukrainian folklore packaged in electronic sound. The name of the band consists of 'Go' as 'movement' and 'A' as an ancient Greek letter 'alpha', which refers to going back to one's cultural roots. The story of the band started in 2012 when the sound producer Taras Shevchenko met the ethnic singer Kateryna Pavlenko. After recording several songs, they realized that Ukrainian folklore and electronic music are a perfect match, combining energy and emotions into an engaging mix.

In early 2020 Go_A won the Ukrainian National Selection for the Eurovision Song contest with the highest number of points from both the jury and the audience. After Eurovision 2020 had been canceled, Go_A was selected to be the Ukrainian entry for Eurovision 2021. In May 2021 Go_A participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam with the song "SHUM" that was fully in Ukrainian. They took the 5th place according to the overall results and the 2nd place according to the televoting. SHUM became a worldwide trend in Spotify hitting the top of most European charts, became #2 in Spotify Viral USA & #1 in Spotify Viral Worldwide. SHUM also became the 1st Ukrainian song ever to hit the Billboard Top 200 chart. At the moment Go_A is constantly performing live in Ukraine and Europe and also working in the studio on their upcoming release.

Balaklava Blues has been described as ethno-shock, folk-noir, and slavic soul. It’s the brainchild of Mark and Marichka Marczyk, creators of the multi-award winning guerrilla-folk-opera Counting Sheep and leaders of the mighty Lemon Bucket Orkestra – Canada’s notorious 13 piece balkan-party-punk-massive.

Falling somewhere between a traditional song cycle and a full blown multimedia techno show, the duo fuses Ukrainian polyphony and other folk traditions with EDM, hip hop, and jazz, and explores the seemingly never-ending blues that have long emanated from the Ukrainian steppe.
