2017/18 Nu Sounds
Every year we present four exciting, talented Manitoba artists and give them an opportunity to try something out of the ordinary. Whether it’s a brand new project, some creatively risky tunes, or artists trying out a new sound; Nu Sounds is about bold ideas and daring creative pursuits.
The results have always been incredible — delighted, engaged, and challenged audiences. Jazz Winnipeg is delighted to be presenting this series for the 2017/18 with support from the Manitoba Arts Council, Manitoba Music, and 101.5 UMFM.
KELLY BADO: POP GOES THE WORLD

Hear pop sung only the way that Kelly Bado can: infused with components of world music, african rhythm, and electronic elements. Featuring new songs in French, Spanish, and English, Bado will brings the work to the stage for the first time at this show. Come ready to move – this is a show that invites the audience to move to the rhythm and dance! Bado’s incredible voice, presence, and star power will make this a show that will stick with you. Sheena Rattai and Daniel Jordan began messing around with looped guitar riffs and grooves, building songs on simple software via email in between playing with Red Moon Road over 6 years ago. Their email exchanges turned into a real project that lands somewhere between Tune-Yards and D’Angelo. An outlet for the duo’s many musical influences that reach beyond Red Moon Road’s folksy output, Blinker Phase explores groove and improv within the confines of set harmonic repetition. This show is going to be utterly different than anything you’ve heard these two do before – in the best possible way.
CARRASCO + KRAUSE ENSEMBLE: MIGRANT STORIES

What happens when you mix two jazz players with heritage spanning from Chile to Russia? You get the magic and story of Jaime Carrasco and Jesse Kraus’ ensemble. Join us for an evening of Chilean and Mennonite migrant stories that pays musical homage to Carrasco and Kraus’ roots for updated standards from the band leaders’ cultural traditions with a distinctly jazz feel.
THE BRIDGE PROGRAM: FROM SYRIA TO NORTH AMERICA

A Canadian saxophonist, a Syrian keyboardist, and a group of students from around the world come together to bring you a blend of sound from Syria and North America. This definitively diverse group of musicians unite on The Park Theatre stage to celebrate compassion, love, peace and what it means to be human.
The Bridge Program was conceived as a means of providing music instruction to children who would otherwise have no access to such opportunities. Keyboardist Mohamad Holilo arrived in Canada from his native Syria in March 2017, a refugee from his war-torn homeland. For Holilo the chance to perform and share some of his favourite songs from his homeland is a gift and he approaches the Nu-Sounds concert with an enthusiasm that is infectious. You’re likely not going to see another show like this any time soon.
