A producer and vocalist from Treaty 1 Territory, CEC has lived in Canada, the US, and Spain and writes music in both English and Spanish. They strategically blend mellow elements of RnB with the groove of Latin percussion and energy of pop. Their songs are built around guitar. However, CEC’s distinct sound comes from their percussive production choices and smooth vocal stacking. Their voice has been compared to Toni Braxton, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Meshell Ndegeocello.
CEC believes that people are attracted to authenticity and that confidence comes from expressing their true self, which is why they feel liberated in writing more explicitly queer music. CEC is hesitant to identify as an RnB artist, recognizing the work and influence of Black artists and musicians in the genre (and most genres, but especially RnB) and the mobility afforded to white artists when categorizing themselves and their work. They’re heavily influenced by the work of earlier Black artists such as Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, and more contemporary ones such as Syd, Daniel Caesar, Yussef Dayes, Lianne La Havas, and KAYTRANADA.
One of the RBCxMusic First Up artists of 2022, CEC’s music is distinguishable by its slow groove, intimate lyrics, and soaring vocal layers.
