Tenor saxophonist John Greene is an up-and-coming musician on the Winnipeg jazz scene. Deeply inspired by swing-era legends such as Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster, John Greene channels their influence while embracing the approach of contemporary traditionalists such as Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen. With a deep appreciation for swing and early jazz styles, John’s rich sound and expansive vocabulary evoke the golden era of jazz while remaining fresh to modern audiences.
John’s latest endeavor – The Winnipeg Swing Project – is a collective of Winnipeg-based musicians sharing a love for early jazz styles. Dedicated to reviving the swing tradition in Winnipeg, they can be found around town performing repertoire from classic composers such as Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, and more. The Winnipeg Swing Project captures the energy and excitement of the big band, bringing exciting arrangements to the intimacy of a small group setting.
