Join the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra on Thursday, April 18th at the West End Cultural Centre as we explore Duke Ellington's Great Paris Concert! Featuring our own amazing soloists and sprinkled with colourful stories about the maestro and his orchestra, it'll be a swinging night to remember!
The Great Paris Concert was the starting point for the Duke Ellington Orchestra's European tours after his success at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival and ushered in an era of subsequent stardom, not just for the maestro, but for the entire band. The WJO will be paying harmonic homage to this landmark musical event by featuring some of the Duke's greatest tunes in all their big band glory, including Rockin' in Rhythm,Asphalt Jungle, Happy Go Lucky Local, The Sunny Side of the Street, Things Ain't What They Used To Be and many more!
Not only will this event feature some of Winnipeg's most talented musicians paying tribute to one of the greatest concerts of its era but it will also include amazing anecdotes about the Duke, his bodacious band, and their time painting Paris red in the halcyon days of jazz! Take a musical trip to Paris circa 1963 with the whimsical sounds of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra and the legendary music of the one and only Duke Ellington!
