TD JAZZ LABS

The TD Jazz Labs are a series of workshops geared towards emerging jazz musicians. The workshops will cover a wide range of topics from repertoire to music technique to the business of being a touring artist.

As always the TD Jazz Labs are free and open to the public.

MARK KELSO

Not only is Mark Kelso a skilled musician who plays drums and percussion, but he is also a singer, producer and composer. Originally hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Kelso has performed with the likes of Michael Bublé, Holly Cole, and Herbie Hancock. He’s in Winnipeg to perform as a part of Shine On: The Universe of John Lennon.

Lucky Peterson was discovered by blues legend Willie Dixon when he was three years old, and released his first record at five. Trained by keyboardists Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith, Peterson went on to play behind Little Milton, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Kenny Neal. The New Yorker calls him “a master of the guitar, organ and microphone.”

Saxophonist Frank Lozano has collaborated with a host of top tier musicians, from Tito Puente to Oliver Jones, and played with a variety of bands, from Tom Gossage’s Other Voice to the Effendi Jazzlab. Since 1985, when François Bourassa won the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s new talent competition, the pianist has recorded regularly and has toured festivals, clubs, and cultural centres across Canada and France.

HENRY JOHNSON

Chicago-born guitarist Henry Johnson started young, playing gospel music and R&B in his early teens. In 1976, he went on the road with jazz organist Jack McDuff and worked with vocalist Donny Hathaway in 1977. You’re The One, Johnson’s recording debut for MCA/Impulse! won a five star rating in Downbeat magazine, and was nominated for a Grammy. Johnson is at the festival as a part of Ramsey Lewis‘ band.

Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer was described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” and by The New Yorker as one of “today’s most important pianists… extravagantly gifted… brilliantly eclectic.”
