Winnipeg hip hop outfit The Lytics were formed in 2003 when brothers Andrew “A-nice” Sannie and Anthony “Ashy” Sannie and their cousin Mungala “Munga” Londe began experimenting with music at home, making several modest recordings over well-known hip hop instrumentals on the family computer. After several months the three MCs built a decent collection of basement recordings and began sharing their music locally with friends under the name The Analytics (later shortened to The Lytics). The group would continue this way until 2008, when they decided that it was time to begin officially operating as a music group.
Shortly after they would record their first EP using original beats from producer B-flat (the 3rd and eldest of the Sannie brothers). The group began playing shows at venues throughout their city and was eventually joined by A-nice’s high school friend DJ Action Rick.
The group has been receiving some impressive exposure as of late, having played both the 2009 Manifesto and NXNE festivals in Toronto.
Buck 65 DVD, First of Five EPs Out Now!
To celebrate 20 years as a "rap weirdo and international romantic," Buck 65 will be releasing one four-song EP a month over the next five months.
Entitled 20 Odd Years, Volume 1 of the series was released this week. It features collaborations with east coast hip hop legend Jorun, Nick Thorburn of Islands, Neil Osbourne of 54-40 and a Leonard Cohen cover featuring Jenn Grant. Volume 1, as well as all subsequent volumes, can be bought on iTunes.
