At 79, Sonny Rollins remains an enigmatic yet unmistakable personality, and performances by this jazz immortal are increasingly rare, making his appearance at the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival even more special.
Rollins will go down in history as not only the single most enduring tenor saxophonist of the bebop and hard bop era, but also the greatest contemporary jazz saxophonist of them all. His fluid and harmonically innovative ideas, effortless manner, and easily identifiable and accessible sound have influenced generations of performers.
In a career spanning more than 60 years, Rollins has recorded dozens of albums under his own name and has appeared on countless others. He has recorded and performed with a veritable who’s who of the jazz world, including Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey. As a composer, he will always be known for memorable melodies like “Oleo,” “Airegin,” and especially “St. Thomas,” songs that have become standards and well-recognized tunes in the jazz canon.
