Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
with Wynton Marsalis
With more than 30 recordings and nine Grammy Awards, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is a giant in the jazz world. He is Artistic Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra which features 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players in the world. Hailed by critics as the greatest jazz orchestra working today, this remarkably versatile group performs in New York, across the U.S. and around the globe. Their extensive repertoire includes original compositions as well as the masterworks of Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane, and other great jazz composers. Still, the Orchestra doesn't treat jazz as a museum exhibit; the Center has commissioned a number of new, in-the-tradition works specifically for the group. Over the course of the '90s, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra augmented their regular concert, touring, and educational activities with international television appearances and special collaborative performances with various symphony orchestras. In the late '90s, the group began to appear more frequently on record as Marsalis began using them for ambitiously expansive projects such as 1997's Jump Start and Jazz and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood in the Fields, and 1999's Sweet Release and Ghost Story and Big Train.
