Jakob Bro Trio

Sunday June 23 @ 6:30 PM
Old Market Square

FREE SHOW

Copenhagen-based ECM Records artist Jakob Bro first enchanted Winnipeg audiences opening for Gregory Porter at the Burton Cummings Theatre during our 2017 festival, followed up with a celebrated performance at The Good Will for our 2018 concert series.

Jakob’s ambient, patient guitar stylings draw from a similar stylistic well to that of label-mate and collaborator Bill Frisell. Joined in his trio by acclaimed drummer Joey Barron (Chet Baker, Stan Getz, John Zorn) and leading bassist Thomas Morgan (regular on ECM Records, Verve, Blue Note releases), the trio released Streams in September 2016. Their latest album, Bay of Rainbows, was released in October 2018 and continues to receive great acclaim.

Jakob grew up in Denmark, where his father was a bandleader, and before Jakob could even walk, he began playing tambourine. Later in life, he was moved to study guitar after discovering the music of Jimi Hendrix. He went on to Denmark’s Royal Academy of Music, Boston’s Berklee School, and the New School in New York.

Jakob is a former member of the Paul Motian & the Electric Bebop Band and a current member of Tomasz Stanko’s Dark Eyes Quintet. Jakob has toured internationally, releasing 13 records as a bandleader and collaborating with musicians like Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, George Garzone, Craig Taborn, Oscar Noriega, and many more.

“Heard live in front of an audience, a Jakob Bro Trio performance is a potent demonstration of their experienced, inspired music-making.” (All About Jazz)
