Halifax’s Gypsophilia is a six-person, high-energy jazz band that is, by turns, angular, sweet, nostalgic, modern, and raucous. Becoming a formidable touring outfit in recent years, the band has regularly crisscrossed the continent to play for sold out crowds in Canada and the US. Their danceable, genre-bending sound has made them an audience favourite at major festivals and small clubs, with members of Gypsophilia performing with diverse acts like Symphony Nova Scotia and Kanye West. Time Out New York describes them as a suave, style mix of jazzy spirit and Eastern European licks, with just enough roughness around the edges to make the music sound authentically lived-in, rather than merely tried-on.
With a combination of serious musicianship, humour and showmanship, they’re capable of enchanting a seated crowd in one moment and whipping them into a dancing, singing frenzy in the next. Gypsophilia’s fourth full-length album, Night Swimming (2015), is a hauntingly beautiful 9-song masterpiece that showcases a darker, cinematic side of their signature ebullient swinging sound. The record garnered multiple nominations for the East Coast Music Awards and Music Nova Scotia Awards, and took home Jazz Record and Group Recording of the year, further adding to their long list of accolades.
