Born into a musical family in Rio de Janeiro, Marco Castillo quickly determined music would be his path. After living in Guatemala where he began learning guitar, he returned to Brazil when he was 13, and began playing with his first trio. By 20, he was recording and touring throughout Brazil with the Iraquitan Trio. A stint with Guio de Morais Orchestra was followed by work with many great Brazilian artists. Since his arrival in Winnipeg, Marco has quickly become one of the city’s busiest musicians, bringing his blend of Brazilian music with jazz and funk to local audiences. On the success of his 2008 CD Brazilian Season, Castillo has now established regular gigs on different venues in town, always packed with music fans and musical collaborators. For this season's Nu Sounds performance, Marco and his quartet – Gilles Fournier on bass, Scott Senior on drums and percussion, Marc Arnould on keyboards, and Castillo on guitar and vocals – will be performing a repertoire of jazz standards and pop songs, including songs by The Beatles, all played in Brazilian rhythms such as Samba, Bossa Nova, Baião and Frevo.
