Jesse Dietschi is a Winnipeg-born bassist and composer currently based out of Brandon, Manitoba. He is currently completing a Masters degree in Composition at Brandon University, studying with award-winning Canadian composer T. Patrick Carrabre, and was hired in 2009 as the Brandon University sessional Jazz Bass Instructor. Jesse has worked with great artists from both the jazz and classical idioms, and is the current bassist in the piano trio lead by New York pianist Michael Cain. The Jesse Dietschi Double Quartet consists of some of the brightest young musicians Manitoba has to offer – Kerry DuWors and Riley McIntyre (violin), Robert Richardson Jr. (viola), Alexa Pilon (cello), Ben Dietschi (saxophone), Michael Cain (keyboards) and Cam Wilks (drums). This innovative group combines elements of acoustic and electric instruments, orchestration and improvisation, and both Western European art music and jazz elements into a sound beyond categorization. Dietschi has created a repertoire that dances between the avant-garde and the traditional, and is highly influenced by such composers as Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Bela Bartok, Maria Schneider, and others. Using many modern compositional techniques, the group has drawn a clear lineage back to the roots of jazz, yet simultaneously pushes forward to develop a new hybrid sound.
