Well known Winnipeg jazz composers Michelle Gregoire, Janice Finlay and Lianne Fournier, along with newcomer Danielle Baert, have created a unique concert concept that is not to be missed. While these veteran composers are frequently heard performing individually with their own groups, COLLABORATE… CREATE… COMPOSE! marks the first time the women have had the chance to work together on a specific project. For this special concert occasion, each composer will premiere new music, including at least one piece inspired by and incorporating a communal collection of musical elements contributed by the individual composers at the start of the project. Since the audience will be privy to this “source” collection, they will be able to experience the performance with greater insight and perhaps even catch a glimpse into the creative mind of each composer. In addition, the concert will feature music written specifically for a jazz sextet featuring two outstanding woodwind specialists, Finlay and Julie Husband, combined with the extraordinary voice of jazz vocalist Fournier. “We are really excited about exploring the unusual palette of musical colours created by combinations of members from the flute, clarinet and saxophone families, and it will be fascinating to hear how each composer uses them in a jazz sextet setting,” says Finlay. Nationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Gregoire will perform on piano, and bassist John Ervin and drummer Rob Siwik will round out the group.
