Manitoba
Musician of the Year – Ron Paley

Local musicians embody musical culture in every community—especially in jazz, where live performance and improvisation is the essence of the music. In recognition of this fact the Manitoba Jazz Musician of the Year Award honours one outstanding Manitoba jazz musician each year.

Ron Paley, this year’s honoree is a Winnipeg cultural institution, with a rich and varied musical career that spans several decades. After playing bass in bands with Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, he formed the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976. His impressive career includes three recordings, countless performances and several compositions for orchestra and big band.

This year, Ron and his Big Band performed his arrangements of Rodgers and Hart songs for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of “A Cinderella Story”. Throughout his impressive career, Ron has sought ways to grow creatively and to merge jazz with other art forms.

Now in its third year, the award has been previously presented to Larry Roy (2004) and Jeff Presslaff (2005).

Ron received the award prior to his performance at the 2007 COOL Jazz Winnipeg Festival.
