Xerox Jazz Educator of the Year Award - Steve Hamilton

Jazz Winnipeg is proud to announce that Steve Hamilton is this year’s recipient of the Xerox Jazz Educator of the Year Award.

Hamilton is a member of the band department at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, a school with a long tradition of award-winning bands. Most recently, the school was awarded the Don Green Award for consistent excellence in a band program. Steve is also a faculty member of the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts and the Preparatory Studies Division at the University of Manitoba. He is a gifted educator who has the ability to teach a wide range of ages and abilities by taking complex concepts and breaking them down into palpable steps. A number of Steve’s students have gone on to pursue successful careers as professional musicians. For the past 20 years, Hamilton has also been an active member of Winnipeg’s live music scene performing with such acts as Michelle Gregoire, Knut Haugsoen, Brian Klowak and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra.

The Xerox Jazz Educator of the Year Award honours one outstanding Manitoba educator who encourages and inspires students to grow musically and academically. By encouraging young people to learn and appreciate music, jazz educators play an essential role in shaping the future of our communities.

“Xerox recognizes the enormous impact teachers have in the lives of young people,” says Nick Allaire, General Manager of Xerox Canada. “We’re thrilled to present this award to Steve Hamilton. He has enriched the lives of his students immeasurably.”
