The TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival has had a terrific and long-standing relationship with The Burton Cummings Theatre. The facility is truly a jewel in our city’s crown.

A few years ago, the good folks over at True North Sports and Entertainment (owners of the MTS Centre, The Winnipeg Jets, and The Manitoba Moose) took over management of the venue. Even more exciting is that earlier this spring, True North announced that it is purchasing the venue.

The timing of this is great, since the 2016 Jazz Festival has a bigger run of shows in the room than ever. True North has been hard at work, investing in the facility. “For sure our main floor seating project will be completed by your show dates— so all new seats with increased leg room on the main floor,” reports True North’s Kevin Donnelly.

“We have new washrooms on main floor and 2nd balcony[…]those are open and functioning and represent big improvements. On these 2 levels (main and 2nd) we had 6 women’s stalls—now there is 11, and for men’s there were 4 and now 9 — line ups are dramatically reduced.”

While careful not to make promises about readiness for June, perhaps one of the most exciting upgrades for the venue is air conditioning. Mr. Donnelly’s goal is to have cooling for the building in time for the Jazz Festival’s run of dates in June.

These changes seem to be just the tip of the iceberg. As traffic through The Burt builds, doubtless the upgrades for this historic building will continue.
